It's alleged a 53-year-old man approached Police Transport Command officers and stabbed a male senior constable in the back.

The officer was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The alleged attacker is believed to have sustained injuries during the arrest and has also been taken to hospital. His condition is unclear.

The matter does not appear to be terror related.

Police established a crime scene, which was forensically examined.

Inquiries into the incident are continuing.
