Pig’s head thrown into courtyard of Newcastle mosque

A pig’s head has been thrown into the courtyard of a Newcastle mosque today in the second attack directed at the venue in as many weeks.

Police were called to the Newcastle Mosque in Wallsend after the head was thrown around 1:30pm.

It comes after a 47-year-old medical researcher was abused and physically attacked after evening prayer last Wednesday.

Dr Iqbal Kabir was allegedly grabbed by the hair, punched in the head and reportedly told to “go back to where you came from”.

Officers would not comment on any possible motive for today’s incident.

Newcastle state Labor MP Sonia Hornery condemned the attack, adding the mosque was normally a peaceful area.

“There is no place for racist attacks in the Hunter like this one,” she said in a statement.

“There have been very few incidents at the Mosque since it opened its doors more than 20 years ago.

“I absolutely deplore this attack and hope the perpetrators are brought to justice quickly.”
