One man dead after Sydney truck crash

An 82-year-old man is dead and a 75-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after a truck crashed into a front yard in Sydney's west.

Police say it's believed the truck clipped a car on Burnett Street in Merrylands early on Saturday afternoon before veering into the front yard, hitting the two men.

The 82-year-old man died at the scene while the 75-year-old was taken to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The truck driver, a 28-year-old man, was taken to Westmead Hospital under police guard where he underwent mandatory blood and urine testing. He has since been released.

His passenger, an 18-year-old man, was treated in hospital for back pain, while the 48-year-old car driver was not injured.
