Two people have suffered smoke inhalation after a washing machine blaze in western Sydney.

The pair were hospitalised after the Samsung top-loader caught fire in Auburn on Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters and NSW Fair Trading officers are trying to determine whether the Samsung machine was one of six models recalled by the state government last year.

"Today's incident is a powerful reminder of the need for consumers to take action and check the model numbers of their Samsung top loader washing machines," NSW Innovation and Regulation Minister Victor Dominello said in a statement.

"I strongly urge consumers with machines subject to the recall to claim a replacement or refund from the supplier."
