NSW top cop race narrows to eight: report

Eight contenders vying for the position of NSW police commissioner will reportedly be interviewed this week, ahead of Andrew Scipione's departure at the beginning of April.

The shortlist includes Assistant Commissioner Mick Fuller, Deputy Commissioner Cath Burn and former deputy Nick Kaldas, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Assistant commissioners Jeff Loy, Geoff McKechnie and Frank Mennilli, along with Deputy David Hudson and Australian Border Force chief Roman Quaedvlieg, round out the group.

Mr Kaldas, who has been working for the UN in Jordan after stepping down from his post for medical reasons, put in a last-minute application before the deadline last month.

When Ms Burn confirmed she had also applied, she said she felt "vindicated" over the long-running police bugging scandal following a NSW Ombudsman's report.

Mr Scipione brought his retirement forward from July and will step down on April 2.

Applicants will be assessed by an independent panel of five before going to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Police Minister Troy Grant and cabinet.
