NSW to spend $8m on dredging strategy

The NSW government will spend an extra $8 million on a dredging strategy that will prioritise access to state-owned ports and harbours.

Under the strategy, released on Wednesday, local councils will be asked to help develop long-term dredging plans for their waterways and undertake their own works.

Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister Melinda Pavey said it would also improve boating safety.

"These waterways are the lifeblood of many communities," she said.

"State-owned ports and harbours that need ongoing dredging to maintain navigational access will be priorities."

Local councils are eligible to apply for funding to cover up to half the cost of dredging projects under the plan.
