Cowra back in lockdown after NSW boy, 9, tests positive

The Cowra Shire in Central West New South Wales will snap back into lockdown from 5pm today, after a young boy tested positive for coronavirus.

Anyone who has been in Cowra from 13 September, regardless of where they are now, must adhere to the stay-at-home requirements, NSW Health declared today.

Cowra Council said the lockdown is scheduled to last seven days, according to its Facebook page.

"There was a nine-year-old boy who attended school in Cowra and there were a number of associated community exposures," NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant said.

The source of the boy's infection is so far unknown and is under investigation by track and trace teams.

Coles Cowra has been confirmed as one location of concern, for visitors to the store on 17 September, 11.20am - 11.40am.

Dr Chant said Cowra had a "high vaccination coverage".

Cowra Shire had just emerged from a state-wide lockdown on September 11.

Other regional NSW towns flagged as areas of concern by Dr Chant included Kempsey on the Mid-North Coast and Dareton by the NSW-Victoria border.

NSW today recorded 935 new COVID-19 cases and four further deaths in the last day.

Eighty-two per cent of eligible residents have had at least one dose of the vaccine.
