Australia's most popular political leader has taken to Sydney's CBD to play magazine salesman, but only 11 people stopped to speak to him.

And it wasn't because of his politics.

Donned in the iconic red hat and trademark fluoro vest, NSW Premier Mike Baird spent the best part of an hour trying to sell the latest edition of The Big Issue.

Alongside experienced seller Scott Woolfe, Mr Baird was taking part in a week-long national campaign to shine a spotlight on homelessness and disadvantage.

"Selling is tough but inspiring because what I saw in young Scotty ... he represents so many people on a daily basis who are determined to work," Mr Baird said.

He later posted to Facebook that he felt like he had turned invisible as Sydneysiders averted their eyes as they passed.

"Today is a reminder for me to slow down a little," he said.

"To have time for everyone, regardless of their attire or status. And it's a reminder that our homeless shouldn't be invisible."

Telstra CEO Andy Penn kicked off the week in Sydney on Monday with Tanya Plibersek selling the magazine, which was launched 20 years ago this Friday.

More than 60 guest sellers are taking part in the campaign, organised by the International Network of Street Papers, around the world this week.

Guest sellers want to raise awareness for the 11,000 people internationally who sell street papers, with The Big Issue aiming to put $100,000 back in the pockets of vendors for the current edition.

"They are out working harder than most," The Big Issue CEO Steven Persson said.

"They could earn more from begging than they do by selling The Big Issue. They choose to work and that makes us proud."
