NSW on alert for 'unusual' fire season

Bushfires in NSW could start as early as Sunday with unusually dry and windy conditions forecast across the state, the Rural Fire Service warns.

Firefighters are running out of time to perform hazard reduction burns, NSW RFS Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers says.

"The latest (weather) bureau predictions are no substantial rainfall until potentially October, so if that does happen then that will be very concerning," he told AAP on Friday.

The statutory bushfire period begins on October 1, but Mr Rogers says this year it could be brought forward by nearly two months.

He also said the risk wasn't limited to any particular region.

"To be honest, it's the majority of the state."

An increased fuel load throughout parts of NSW has been caused by a dry winter with warm daytime temperatures.

"I drove out to Dubbo the other week and the landscape is extremely brown out there," the deputy commissioner said.

He said this extended to southern NSW, the Hunter Valley, greater Sydney and the Illawarra region, but residents in all parts of the state need to be aware of the unseasonal risks.

"The important thing for residents is to know what they're going to do if there is a fire.

"And that's really having a bushfire survival plan because there's no point in waiting until the fire's there until you start doing something," Mr Rogers said.

This included cleaning out gutters and owning a hose which extends right around your home.

"[When the fire comes] you need to know if you're going to stay or whether you're going to go. And if you're going to go, where are you going to go?"
