NSW man remanded after 'savage' attack

A man repairing a car outside his home was subject to a random attack that left him so bloodied his neighbours couldn't recognise him.

Slobodan Radenkovic, 65, was allegedly set upon by Alex Cosic, who wielded a hunting knife in an attempt to rob him in April last year.

The Parramatta Bail Court, where Cosic appeared charged with armed robbery causing grievous bodily harm, heard DNA evidence linked the 23-year-old to the crime at Edensor Park in western Sydney.

Magistrate Christopher McRobert said Mr Radenkovic was working on repairs on a car in his driveway when he was targeted in the unprovoked attack.

Mr McRobert said Mr Radenkovic retreated to his garage to protect himself "with some success".

During a struggle, Cosic allegedly ripped a gold chain off Mr Radenkovic's neck before taking off in his car.

"The victim was bleeding so profusely that his neighbours did not immediately recognise him," Mr McRobert told the court on Saturday.

"This is a savage, unprovoked attack on a 65-year-old man at his own home."

Cosic's lawyer said his client had a gambling problem but had sought help.

Mr McRobert found Cosic posed an unacceptable risk of not turning up to future court dates and of committing other offences if granted bail.

Cosic cried, "Oh my God," and put his head in his hands as his bail application was refused.

The case was adjourned to Campbelltown Local Court on July 16.
