Authorities also confirmed an elderly pedestrian struck by a vehicle while trying to cross a Sydney highway a week ago has since died in hospital.

The 82-year-old man had been attempting to cross the Princes Highway in Carlton, in Sydney's south, mid-morning on August 20 when he was struck by a VW Combi van.

He died in hospital on Monday, a police spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday.
