NSW man charged with threatening police

A knife attached to a hockey stick has narrowly missed the head of a police officer who was responding to a domestic violence dispute in the NSW Lake Macquarie region.

Officers attended the Pelican property on Saturday morning after reports a 28-year-old man had assaulted his father before locking himself inside a shed.

It's alleged that inside the shed, the man armed himself with a large knife attached to the handle of a hockey stick.

The 28-year-old allegedly struck the inside of the door with the weapon when officers attempted to gain entry.

The blade penetrated the door and narrowly missed an officer's head, police say.

Specialist officers were called in and the man surrendered without further incident.

He was taken to Belmont Police Station and charged with a string of offences including using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Sunday.
