A NSW learner driver has been charged over a smash on the state's northern tablelands that killed his 19-year-old passenger.

The 18-year-old was allegedly driving an unregistered and uninsured ute that crashed at Shannon Vale Road, Glen Innes, on Saturday morning.

The female passenger was taken to Glen Innes Hospital, where she later died.

On Thursday, police arrested the driver and charged him with a string of offences including dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death and performing burnouts.

The vehicle allegedly had "misleading" number plates and defective tyres.

The teen was granted conditional bail and is expected to appear at Glen Innes Local Court in late September.
