NSW man bailed after alleged sex offence

A NSW man was carrying a sex toy, a USB containing pornographic videos and a condom when he went to meet an underage boy after having sexually-explicit conversations online, a Sydney court has heard.

But what Darren Joseph Shai-Hee didn't know was the 14-year-old he'd been talking to was actually a fiction created by child exploitation detectives.

As a result, Shai-Hee was arrested this week when he allegedly went to a Sydney train station for the planned meeting.

The 55-year-old was supported by family during his first appearance at Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday, accused of trying to procure a child for sexual activity.

Commonwealth prosecutor Louise Thompson said Shai-Hee arranged to meet with the fictional child after chatting with him online for about a month and sending sexually-explicit photos.

He allegedly told detectives posing as the boy to bring condoms to Westmead train station and was carrying the sex toy, USB and a condom when arrested.

Ms Thompson said the crown's case against Shai-Hee was strong and there was a risk he would fail to appear in court if granted bail.

She also said there were serious concerns for the wider community with Shai-Hee first coming to the attention of authorities after a complaint from a young teenage boy.

But Shai-Hee's defence barrister, Will Tuckey, said his client's support network was in Australia and he'd never travelled outside the country.

He said Shai-Hee was on a disability support pension with family members reporting he wasn't capable of independent living and was reliant on their support.

Magistrate Tim Keady ultimately granted bail with a number of conditions, including that Shai-Hee not use the internet, not contact anyone under 18 and not leave his house without a supervisor.

The 55-year-old, who is charged with one count of using a carriage service to procure someone under 16 for sexual activity, is due back in court in mid-January.
