NSW maintains record jobs growth

The Baird government's big ticket infrastructure projects have helped NSW maintain the lowest unemployment rate in the country, Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian says.

A strong housing construction sector and healthy consumer confidence have also contributed to the state's nine-month unemployment record, she said.

The latest Bureau of Statistics figures show the state's jobless rate fell to 5.3 per cent in February.

That figure is lower than the national rate of 5.8 per cent for the month, and means NSW has had the lowest unemployment rate of any state for nine consecutive months.

The ABS statistics also show the state now accounts for almost 60 per cent of the new jobs across Australia, after 143,000 jobs were created in NSW over the past 12 months.

Ms Berejiklian said the result confirmed the underlying strength of the NSW economy.

"While the national economy and the other states are experiencing challenges amid the transition away from the mining boom, NSW is proving to be the engine of economic growth," she said.
