NSW loses 9000 jobs in August

More than 9000 jobs were lost in NSW last month, official figures show.

The total number of people employed in the state fell by about 9000 in August, seasonally adjusted, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The overall fall was caused by a steep drop of 17,300 part-time jobs, which were offset by the creation of 8000 full-time positions.

The NSW unemployment rate is now at five per cent, its lowest rate in four years and the best rate amongst the states.

The national average is 5.6 per cent.

Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian said it was the 33rd month unemployment in NSW had been below the national average.

"The NSW government's massive investment pipeline and fiscal discipline is helping spur confidence in our economy - making NSW the number one destination to live, work and do business," she said.
