NSW jail worker charged over contraband

A prison mental health worker has been accused of smuggling prescription drugs and mobile phones into a NSW jail.

Investigators seized "several items of interest" when they searched a house in Nowra, on the state's south coast, on Thursday morning.

Police say Melanie Alice Ross worked for the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network at Goulburn Correctional Centre.

Suspicions were raised after prison staff found contraband at the facility - famous for its top-security SuperMax compound - last week.

Ross has been charged with five counts of possessing a restricted substance and two counts of introducing an item or items into a place of detention without authority.

She was granted bail during an appearance before Nowra Local Court on Thursday and will face Goulburn Local Court on July 8.
