NSW jail officer allegedly smuggled drugs

A male prison officer has been charged after allegedly being paid to smuggle a mobile phone and drugs into a prison on the NSW South Coast.

The 50-year-old man was arrested at a correctional facility in Nowra on Thursday with detectives also seizing two mobile phones from a car parked at the prison.

Officers also allegedly found drugs, believed to be "ice" and heroin, at a Shoalhaven home.

Police allege the Corrective Services NSW officer trafficked three packages - including a mobile phone and drugs - into the Nowra facility in return for financial benefits of up to $6400 from the family members of inmates.

The 50-year-old was granted conditional bail to appear at Nowra Local Court on June 15, and has been suspended by Corrective Services NSW.
