NSW ice dealers face life sentence

Ice manufacturers and dealers could be jailed for life under new laws announced by the NSW government.

Anyone found manufacturing or in possession of ice, from 500 grams to a kilo, will be charged with an offence that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Attorney General Gabrielle Upton said the government would meet community expectations to ensure ice manufacturers and dealers were brought to justice.

"Drug manufacturers and dealers, particularly those involved in ice, profit from the misery and misfortune of others," Ms Upton said in a statement.

"We believe serious drug manufacturers and dealers spreading this poison throughout the community must be held to higher account."

Previously the law allowed for jail terms up to 20 years.

Assistant Minister for Health Pru Goward said the government recognises the need to focus on earlier detection and treatment services for people who are trying to overcome drug addiction.

"Our $11 million investment will deliver more targeted services that keep people off ice and out of emergency rooms," Ms Goward said.

The changes come into effect on Tuesday.
