The NSW Government has announced the creation of early intervention program to divert youth from violent extremism.

The $4 million program will be created in consultation with community groups, including religious leaders, over two years to identify Australians who have "disengaged" with society.

"We must have the community on board if we are to successfully combat this scourge on our society," Premier Mike Baird said in a statement on Monday.

The program will aim to support community groups in engaging with at-risk youth and combat the threat posed by foreign fighters, Mr Baird said.

The Department of Education will also be asked to address antisocial behaviour in schools using a range of existing resources.
