NSW girl assaulted after accepting a lift

An 11-year-old girl was indecently assaulted by a man in a car after accepting a lift in the NSW Hunter Valley region.

The girl, dressed in a yellow and blue fairytale costume, was walking down George Booth Drive near West Wallsend about 12pm on Monday when the stranger stopped his maroon or dark red 4WD and offered her a lift.

Police say the man stopped the car near Richmond Vale, where he indecently assaulted the girl.

The girl managed to get out of the vehicle and run away. A passing motorist stopped to help her shortly afterwards and called police.
