NSW drivers keep hands on phones

NSW drivers just can't seem to keep their hand off it.

Police have nabbed nearly 1000 drivers using their mobile phones behind the wheel in a one-day operation.

One woman in Sydney's west was charged with drink driving in a school zone while using her mobile phone.

The 51-year-old woman was stopped by police just after 8am in Parramatta and will appear in court in September.

During a state-wide traffic crackdown, NSW police detected 937 drivers using mobile phones, 818 for school zone offences and 388 for vehicle standard issues.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Bob Ryan said drivers using mobile phones were putting other road users at risk, and contributing to road deaths.

There have already been nearly 400 NSW road-related fatalities this year.

In June, NSW Transport launched its "Get Your Hand Off It!" road safety campaign to address the issue of mobile phone driver distraction.
