NSW deploys 20th shark listening station

Another shark listening station has been deployed off the NSW coast days after a surfer was mauled in the mid-north.

The new listening station, which monitors the movement of sharks and tweets warnings to beachgoers, is the 20th to be dropped this summer.

"We have 14 VR4Gs operating north of Sydney, one at Bondi, and five on the south coast," the state's primary industries minister Niall Blair said on Sunday.

"This technology is one component of the NSW government's suite of shark attack mitigation measures."

The announcement comes after 65-year-old Colin Rowland was bitten by what is believed to have been a great white shark measuring between 2.5 and 3.5 metres while surfing at Seven Mile Beach, south of Forster, on Thursday morning.

Following the attack - the sixth in NSW for 2016 - five smart drum lines were deployed in the Forster area.

In the past 12 months, there have been 114 white sharks and 88 bull sharks tagged by the department or CSIRO that will now register when they swim near the latest VR4G listening station, Mr Blair said.
