NSW couple face life jail over terror plot

A teenage husband and wife accused of plotting a terror attack in Sydney are facing life imprisonment after fresh charges were laid against them, one year after they were arrested.

An investigation by counter-terrorism officers triggered the more serious charges laid against Sameh Bayda and Alo-Bridget Namoa, both 19, on Wednesday.

The two have been in custody since being arrested in early 2016, but now both face an additional charge of "conspiracy to do an act, or acts in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act or acts".

Namoa, who once allegedly referred to the couple as an "Islamic Bonnie and Clyde", was charged after she refused to answer questions at a NSW Crime Commission hearing.

Her husband allegedly possessed documents from al-Qaeda, as well as instructions for a homemade bomb and a guide for a stabbing attack, court documents have previously revealed.

The pair, who did not appear in court, did not apply for bail on Wednesday.

It's expected the case will go to a committal hearing when it returns to court on March 15.
