An off-duty police officer has been charged with driving while four times over the legal alcohol limit after he crashed his car into a tree on NSW's north coast.

The 53-year-old policeman was driving at Banora Point about 1pm on Tuesday when he crashed into the tree, NSW Police said in a statement on Wednesday.

The off-duty officer returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.202 and is expected to face Tweed Heads Local Court on February 20.
