NSW cop denies assault on woman

A Sydney police officer accused of assaulting a woman while he was on duty has pleaded not guilty.
Sergeant Mark Callanan, who is attached to Central Metropolitan Region, allegedly assaulted Julie Shepherd sometime between noon and 6pm on January 17.
He was charged with the assault and also served a suspension notice in July, police say.

The 52-year-old did not appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday but his lawyer entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf.
His matter is set to return to court on October 6.
