‘Well, that’s ruined my weekend’: Paddle-boarder drives himself to hospital after NSW shark attack

A paddle-boarder who was bitten by a shark yesterday on the NSW South Coast showed remarkable composure after the attack – remarking “well, that's ruined my weekend” and then driving himself to hospital.

The man was bitten on the ankle at McKenzies Beach, near Batemans Bay on the state's south coast, around 7am yesterday.

Peter Forsyth was surfing with his friend Danny Freeman when he heard the paddle-boarder cry for help.

The pair used a towel and Gaffer Tape to create a bandage to treat the man’s leg wound.

"We had to tie it tightly to stop the bleeding," Mr Forsyth told the Newcastle Herald.

"They were quite deep perforations. It was quite nasty."

He said the man seemed nonplussed about being bitten by what they believed to be a small bronze whaler or bull shark.

"He was pretty tough," Mr Forsyth said.

"He said, 'well, that's ruined my weekend'.

"I think he was in a bit of shock.”

After the man drove himself to hospital, Mr Forsyth said the surfers returned to water for another hour.  

Three beaches in the area will remain closed today.

Lifeguards will make a decision on reopening after sweeping the water with jet skis.
