Nile demands NSW power worker guarantees

Premier Mike Baird insists electricity workers' jobs will be protected under his privatisation plan amid calls from a key upper house MP for a five-year guarantee.

Christian Democrat Fred Nile has told Fairfax Media he wants the guarantee before he considers voting for the sell-off.

His demand may cause a headache for Mr Baird as Reverend Nile currently holds the balance of power in the state's upper house alongside the Shooters and Fishers Party who have also voiced opposition to the asset lease.

Mr Baird insists Mr Nile's demand doesn't represent a roadblock to his centrepiece election policy.

"We've said we're happy to look at protections for workers," the premier told reporters on Thursday.

"That's exactly what we've done in the transactions we've done," he said, alluding to employee protections included in the government's recent port sales.

Mr Nile said his party would seek guarantees before backing the plan.

"There would be no sackings for five years (and) their existing conditions and superannuation arrangements must be guaranteed," he told Fairfax Media.
