Bodies of mother and daughter, 2, recovered from bottom of cliff south of Sydney

Police have identified a woman found dead at the bottom of a cliff south of Wollongong yesterday.

The bodies of Tanja Ludwig, 33, and her daughter Tilly, 2, were found at the bottom of Robertson Lookout, at Mount Keira.

Emergency services were called to the beauty spot just after 1.50pm following reports of a concern for welfare.

Their bodies were retrieved last night following a five-hour mission by emergency services.

Police said they were treating the incident as a potential murder-suicide.

Mother and daughter lived in Coniston, near Wollongong.

However Ms Ludwig was originally from Germany and had been in Australia for several years.

Today shocked neighbours spoke of the sadness of the news.

One told 9News: "I really feel sorry, she was so young, such a nice person, I can't believe it."

Police were back at the site at first light today.

Superintendent Chris Craner said emergency services dealt with a distressing incident yesterday.

“Unfortunately once police and emergency services arrived they discovered a lady in her early 30s and a child at the bottom of Robertson Lookout,” he said.

 “It’s going to be absolutely devastating for the community who don't know these people and who don't know what it's about and it's going to be devastating for the family.”

Supt Cramer said his thoughts were also with the emergency services who have turned up work and had to deal with this incident.

"Just seeing the police walk off and the ambulance walk off, you just go, 'you poor buggers. I know what you are about to face when you get down there'," he said.

Supt Craner also said some family had turned up to the site and were comforted by emergency services yesterday.

Officers from Wollongong Police District are continue their investigations into the incident.
