Newcastle beaches reopen after nine days

All of Newcastle's beaches have reopened following a record nine-day closure due to shark sightings.

Reports of a five-metre great white shark and a three-and-a half metre shark just off the coast throughout last week kept all six of the city's beaches closed.

The great white was first spotted just off Merewether Beach on January 10 and there were confirmed sightings of both sharks on Friday.

The all-clear was given at midday today after lifeguards completed jet ski patrols of the water.

"It has been quite a while since the last sighting and we've gotten the all clear to reopen this afternoon," said Nobbys beach inspector Paul Bernard.

"We will continue to maintain a high level of surveillance this week, but all shark warnings have been called off and we're moving into normal rough surf operating mode."

The wild weather has temporarily closed all of the beaches except Nobbys and Stockton.
