Nearly 2000 NSW drivers caught in 24 hours

Almost 2000 drivers have been caught breaking school zone and mobile phone road rules in just 24 hours across NSW.

Police recorded more than 1000 offences committed in school zones around the state while nearly 900 drivers were fined for using mobile phones while driving on Wednesday.

"Our officers had to issue 2771 infringements in a single day for abysmal driver behaviour, which clearly suggests some road users lack the common sense or responsibility to do the right thing," NSW Police Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said.

Hundreds of drivers were found to have been texting and holding mobile phones up to their ears despite rule changes in 2012 for all phones to be used in cradles.

The drivers were caught by police during a 24-hour road blitz, dubbed Operation Compliance.
