Navy warship seizes $88.5m heroin haul

Navy officers aboard an Australian warship have seized more than $88 million worth of heroin while on patrol in the Middle East.

Crew from the HMAS Warramunga made the 295 kilogram discovery after one of its Seahawk helicopters spotted a suspect boat in the Arabian Sea.

The drugs were later dumped at sea.

It's the 11th seizure in the seven months since the Warramunga was deployed to the region in November 2017.

Almost 20 tonnes of hashish and nearly two tonnes of heroin, valued at about $1.56 billion, have been intercepted so far.

Commander Dugald Clelland said the seizures have helped disrupt the flow of funding to terrorists in the Middle East.

"To have a successful interdiction on this latest patrol means a lot to the crew and reinforces the importance of our mission here in the Middle East region," he aid in a statement on Saturday.

January 3, 2018: 3.5 tonnes of hashish

January 7: 111kg heroin

January 24: 915kg heroin

February 1: 414kg heroin

March 3: 4.1 tonnes hashish

March 4: 3.9 tonne hashish

March 6: 132kg heroin

May 10: 295kg heroin
