A naked man, armed with a knife, allegedly mutilated the family dog and tried to force his way into a neighbour's home in Sydney before being arrested.

Police were called to the Auburn home following reports the undressed man was trying to force his way inside a unit while brandishing a knife on March 10.

The occupants pointed police to another unit in the complex where officers located the suspect.

The 34-year-old closed the front door as they approached and spoke to officers in the foyer.

But they arrested him and entered the home he shares with his elderly parents.

Inside they found a large kitchen knife and a mutilated Shihtzu dog, police said in a statement on Friday.

The dog was rushed to a vet but died of its injuries

The man was taken to Cumberland Hospital for assessment.

He was released into police custody on Friday and charged with torture and beating an animal causing its death, aggravated break-and-enter and commit a serious indictable offence -destroy or damage property while armed.

He was refused bail and is expected before Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.
