More floods on the way for northern NSW

Flooding is expected to hit already saturated parts of northern NSW as a low-pressure system brings heavy rainfall in coming days.

But the Bureau of Meteorology doesn't expect a repeat of the extreme weather that battered parts of the state last week.

Coastal gales and localised falls above 350mm are possible on the mid north coast and northern rivers regions, including Tweed Heads, Lismore, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie.

Flood watches were issued on Wednesday for coastal rivers north of Taree, with the worst of the rain likely to hit on Friday and Saturday.

"Further rainfall is possible for catchments that experienced flooding last week, with renewed flooding also possible on Sunday given the saturated landscape," said the BOM's NSW regional director Barry Hanstrum.

"However, we don't expect to see the extreme rainfall totals and destructive winds that we saw in the last event," he said.

Sydney and the Hunter region are likely to be spared the worst of the weather.
