More CSG licences cancelled in NSW

Another three coal seam gas exploration licences have been cancelled in NSW as the Baird government tries to reassure voters that it is clamping down on the industry.

The licences were issued under the previous Labor government and spanned Sydney's sensitive water catchment areas.

Resources Minister Anthony Roberts said they were cancelled after being bought back by the government under its revamped gas plan.

"Our plan ensures the gas industry in NSW will operate on our terms, not to the low standards set by the previous Labor government," Mr Roberts said on Monday.

The coalition government in 2013 placed a moratorium on CSG activity in special water catchment areas while Labor has promised a complete ban in the same areas.

Twelve licences have now been cancelled by the Baird government as part of its buy-back program.

The latest cancellations cover areas near Port Kembla, Clifton and west of Oakdale.

Community opposition to the CSG industry has been a major issue during the NSW election campaign.
