Mobile seized from NSW supermax jail

A mobile phone has been found in one of NSW's highest-security prisons, an inmate trying to flush it down a toilet as officers searched his cell.

Corrective services carried out an operation on Thursday night after a hand-held mobile phone detector picked up signals from a mobile phone in Goulburn SuperMax prison.

Officers caught the inmate off-guard in his cell as he tried to flush the phone, which was recovered by corrective services, Acting Assistant Commissioner Angie West said in a statement on Friday.

She said a significant security threat had been removed from the centre.

The discovery comes two weeks after notorious NSW inmate and Brothers 4 Life boss Bassam Hamzy was found to have a mobile phone at the same prison.

The 3cm-long phone was found in his cell by a sniffer dog on September 15.

Hamzy is serving a long sentence over a 1998 shooting murder, running a drug syndicate and ordering kidnappings from his prison cell.

A full investigation was set to be launched into how the phone was smuggled into the prison, NSW Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin said after the Hamzy incident.
