The body of a 54-year-old missing NSW man has been discovered in a forest near Orange in the state's central west.

Police say a resident who lives near Canobolas State Forest discovered the body on Sunday afternoon.

It's believed to be that of missing Orange man Steven Groat although police said on Monday the body has yet to be formally identified.

Police say they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Mr Groat, from Wyoming on the NSW Central Coast, was last seen on December 19 after visiting a friend in Orange, around 20km from the Canobolas State Forest.

His blue Commodore was discovered in the forest on Christmas Eve.

The cause of death is yet to be determined.
