Millers Point resident left homeless
A Sydney man has been left homeless after being evicted from his public housing in Millers Point, near the Rocks in Sydney.
Peter Muller was evicted from his High Street home on Wednesday morning, following an attempt to block the eviction on Tuesday by a group of protestors.
The 57-year-old says he's been made homeless after the sheriff "bashed down his doors" while he was at work.
"I have been made homeless, I have nowhere to go," Mr Muller told the AAP on Wednesday.
"It's quite despicable."
When he finished work, Mr Muller says he went to his Millers Point home and found an eviction notice on the door with a phone number to organise the collection of his belongings from storage.
But, Mr Muller agreed to move out months ago, the NSW department of family and community services (FACS) said in a statement on Wednesday.
"In March he gave a legally binding commitment to move out and was allowed until April 28 to organise his move," the FACS said.
"He has failed to move out."
The FACS previously noted Mr Muller was not entitled to public housing because he part owns a property in the Southern Highlands and worked as an electrician, which made him ineligible for support.
"Forced eviction is a last measure, used in this instance when all other avenues to achieve a fair outcome had been exhausted," a FACS spokesperson said.
The state government announced in 2014 it would sell 300 state-owned properties in the prime real estate location, adjacent to the historic Rocks district, to raise up to $500 million.
The government claimed the average annual maintenance bill for a Millers Point house, some which are heritage listed, was high compared to homes in other areas.
Mr Muller's Southern Highlands property is "just a block of dirt in the bush" with no electricity or running water, resident and supporter Barney Gardner told AAP on Wednesday.
"Even if he agreed to move out, where was he going to move to?" he said.
"This state Liberal government is all about shortening the public housing waiting list and putting roofs over the heads of homeless people, well they've just added to it."
