Condolence books will be placed at public locations across NSW so people can pay tribute to the victims of flight MH17.

NSW Premier Mike Baird says the books will be made available at locations across NSW including Parliament House, the Sydney Opera House and NSW electorate offices.

"Our grief is compounded when we learn of the life stories of the victims and the happy circumstances which took them overseas before their lives were tragically cut short," Mr Baird said in a statement.

"The condolence books will allow the public to express their sorrow and pay tribute to the victims."

Six of the up to 39 Australian citizens and residents on board the downed flight were from NSW.

Mr Baird said the NSW government would discuss with the families a suitable way for the condolence books to be presented at a more appropriate time.
