McNamara denies plotting to kill Gao

Murder-accused Glen McNamara left home wearing a dark hoodie, baseball cap and sunglasses, not to avoid a perceived triad threat but to kill Jamie Gao and deal his drugs, his co-accused's defence lawyer has told a court.

About an hour before Mr Gao was shot dead at a Padstow unit on May 20, 2014, McNamara left his Cronulla home in disguise carrying a .25 calibre firearm, Roger Rogerson's lawyer George Thomas told the men's Supreme Court murder trial on Wednesday.

McNamara is captured on CCTV leaving with a plastic bag but said he didn't remember what he was carrying.

"Your purpose was to engage in drug supply and kill Jamie Gao," Mr Thomas put to McNamara during cross examination.

"No, it wasn't," McNamara said.

"You were in possession of a .25 calibre firearm," Mr Thomas put to Mcnamara.

"No that's not true," he replied.

Earlier, when asked why he was wearing the outfit, which he denied was a disguise, McNamara said it was "to conceal myself from the triads".

During Wednesday's grilling McNamara repeatedly denied fabricating evidence or lying, despite repeated and at times animated assertions from Mr Thomas.

Rogerson and McNamara have both pleaded not guilty to Mr Gao's murder.

Both accuse each other of shooting Mr Gao.

The body of the 20-year-old student was spotted by fishermen on May 26, 2014, wrapped in a surfboard bag and a blue tarpaulin, bobbing in waters off Cronulla.

The crown case is that the two men shot the alleged drug dealer before stuffing his body into a surfboard bag and dumping it at sea.

McNamara is due to return to the witness box when the trial continues on Thursday.
