Man's finger severed in western Sydney backyard attack

A man has lost a finger and had another partially severed after being attacked in the backyard of his western Sydney home.

Police were called to a house on Stolle Street in Shalvey just before 2am this morning after reports a man had been assaulted at the home.

The victim, 44, was attacked by two men after he went into his backyard to investigate noises.

He was struck in the hand by an unknown weapon before his attackers fled the scene on bicycles.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene before taking him to Westmead Hospital with a severed finger while another was partially severed in the attack.

Police have established a crime scene at the home, which is being examined by forensic officers.
