A NSW man laughed in delight as he filmed his colleague nearly get struck by lightning while moving his car out of hailstorm.

The potentially deadly situation played out in the Hunter Valley town of Rutherford on Thursday when Jason Tait was moving his colleague Tim McDonad's car out of hail during a storm, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

His mobile phone video shows Mr Tait approaching in a black ute when a large bolt of lightning strikes it and arcs to a nearby power pole.

"I just got that on film," Mr McDonald shouts as hails pelts down all around him.

Despite taking a direct hit the vehicle hardly slows down.

Mr Tait later said that he was oblivious to what happened and refused to believe he had survived a lightning strike until he saw the footage.

"I've seen a flash out the back window but that was it," he said.

"I was a bit shocked when I actually saw what happened. I honestly thought those guys were stitching me up."

Mr McDonald described his mate's lucky escape as "absolutely amazing".
