A man has been shot and injured by someone in a passing car as he walked along a street in rural NSW.

Police say the 28-year-old was in the central-western town of Parkes in the early hours of New Year's Day when a car came up from behind.

He heard a "pop" and was shot in the left wrist.

Two passersby helped the man, who's had surgery to remove the bullet.

Police say they tried to stop a Holden Commodore described in the attack, but it drove away.

A reward of up to $1000 is available for information which leads to an arrest.
