Man killed in NSW Riverina truck-car crash

A man is dead and another is in a critical condition in hospital following two separate road accidents in NSW.

Emergency crews were called to the first crash on the Olympic Highway, Gerogery, just north of Albury, at lunchtime on Monday.

Police say they have been told a Ford Falcon station wagon was heading north and a truck was travelling south when the two vehicles collided.

The driver of the Ford, a man aged in his 50s who has not been formally identified, died at the scene.

The truck driver, 59, was trapped for a short time before he was freed and taken to Albury Base Hospital for treatment and mandatory testing.

Less than three hours later, in western Sydney, an 80-year-old man was hit by a ute as he crossed a road in Smithfield.

He was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.

Police say the man behind the wheel, aged in his 20s, was a disqualified driver.

He was unhurt but was taken to Fairfield Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
