Man in custody over alleged park attack

A man accused of violently attacking a sleeping homeless man in Sydney will remain behind bars after being charged with attempted murder.

Ngu Ba Tran, 52, did not apply for bail and it was formally refused during his first mention at Central Local Court on Monday following the alleged attack.

Tran allegedly struck the man in the face before hitting him repeatedly with a shopping trolley early on Sunday morning, police previously said.

The homeless man, 38, had been sleeping on a bench in Sydney's Hyde Park.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries including bleeding on the lungs and brain, police said, and on Monday afternoon was in a stable condition.

Tran, who has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and causing wounding/ grievous bodily harm with intent to murder, is scheduled to face the same court for another mention on November 7.
