A NSW man has suffered serious injuries after he was attacked by a machete-wielding intruder at a home west of Albury.

Police say the victim was struck after he answered a knock at the front door of his home in Howlong around midnight on Tuesday.

The alleged attacker ran from the house, but officers arrested him nearby soon after the attack.

Police have charged the 47-year-old with three offences including reckless wounding and drug supply, and he was refused bail to appear at Albury Local Court on Tuesday.

The injured man was taken to Albury Base Hospital in a stable condition with an injury to his right hand, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman told AAP.
