Drunk driver 'guilty' over backyard crash

A drunk driver who crashed into the backyard of a Sydney townhouse complex before rolling down an embankment, told neighbours he would come back and shoot them if they called police.

The details of Mathew Silva's crimes were revealed on Wednesday after the 24-year-old pleaded guilty to numerous charges at Waverley Local Court, including driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

According to court documents, Silva collided with a fence along Wassell Street in Chifley at 11.20pm, before rolling down an embankment where the car came to a stop just 10 metres from houses.

Neighbours who witnessed the crash say they saw Silva climb out of the damaged car's passenger door and stumble around drunkenly before threatening them.

"I'll give you all cash if you don't ring," Silva is quoted as telling them.

"I know where you live, I'll come back and f***ing shoot ya's.

When police caught up with him at his nearby home half an hour later, they say they overheard Silva panicking about being caught and a woman advising him to discard his clothes.

"Cops are coming for me; I don't know what to do," Silva was heard saying.

"Get out of the clothes and get in the shower. You stink," the woman replied.

When police entered the house, they found him drunk and in the shower.

Police say Silva struggled to put on a pair of pants and could not even stand upright.

They Tasered him when Silva objected to being handcuffed.

During his police interview the next day, Silva admitted he had drunk half a bottle of vodka before the crash.

He also claimed he did not know who was driving the car involved in the crash and said it could have been stolen.

Silva was on parole at the time and has an extensive criminal record.

He was convicted in 2014 for drug supply, aggravated robbery and illegal firearm possession, and was sentenced to more than three years in prison.

He has been suspended from driving numerous times and was found drunk behind the wheel in 2013.

Silva will be sentenced at Waverley Local Court on October 7.
