Man who drowned off Sydney beach was recently released from prison

A man who drowned after going missing off a Sydney beach had been recently released from the nearby Long Bay prison.
The man, 30, went missing on May 25 after coming into difficulty while swimming about 100m offshore of Little Bay Beach in the city’s eastern suburbs.

Police were unable to find the man after searching for a day, with the search being called off due to the dangerous surf conditions.
His body was found by fishermen about two nautical miles from the beach on Sunday.
Corrective Services NSW have confirmed the man was “subject to community supervision” at the time of his death.

“Given NSW Police are investigating the incident, we cannot comment further,” a Corrective Services NSW spokesperson said.
Nine.com.au understands the man was not an inmate at the Long Bay jail but a parolee who was living on the complex in a supported post-release accommodation.
Sources with knowledge of the situation have also denied reports the man’s electric monitoring tag he was wearing at the time malfunctioned.
It is not known what charges the man was convicted and jailed on.
NSW Police said the man’s death was still being investigated.
