Man drove 200km/h while drunk: NSW cops

A driver reached speeds in excess of 200km/h while he was more than four times over the legal blood-alcohol limit in mid-north NSW, police say.

The 31-year-old man was driving a BMW coupe at 161km/h in an 80km/h zone at Rainbow Beach near Kempsey on Sunday afternoon, police say.

Police began a pursuit and the driver allegedly surpassed the 200km/h mark in a bid to escape capture.

He evaded police but was later arrested after abandoning the car and running across nearby farmland, police say.

He allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.212.

The Taree man was charged with numerous driving offences including speeding, high-range drink-driving and evading police.

His licence was suspended, his car was confiscated, and he was refused bail to appear before Port Macquarie Local Court on Monday.
