Man killed, two seriously injured after crash on major Sydney road

A man has been thrown from a car and killed, while two others are seriously injured in hospital after a crash on a busy road in north-west Sydney.

A Mitsubishi hit the back of a truck on Lane Cove Road in North Ryde about 1am today, which sent it to the front yard of a family home.

"He hit the truck two houses up. Then somehow hit the pole, then the car jumped to the front yard," homeowner Bassam Aridah told 9News.

"I just heard this massive thud, not just a thud, it shook the house. And a screech, which I assume was the truck," witness Kim Clayton told 9News.

A 38-year-old man in the front seat was thrown through the windscreen and died on impact.

Locals rushed to help the 45-year-old male driver and 37-year-old female passenger who were trapped inside the wreckage.

The woman was in the backseat and was able to be freed.

She was comforted by rescuers as they waited for emergency services to arrive.

The man remained trapped as locals were unable to pry the door open.

Firefighters later arrived and helped free the man.

Paramedics treated the pair and then took them to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The truck driver, a 61-year-old man, was uninjured and also taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A large stretch of the road has been declared a crime scene, and police forensic experts have launched investigations, expected to take some time.

The road was formerly closed but has since reopened.

Investigators are looking at all potential factors that could have caused the crash, including speed.
